Does it rain in Gozo during September?
The month of September is known to bring some rain. The much-needed rain will fill valleys and dwelling wells. In addition, it brings hope to the wild vegetation that has survived the harsh summer heat. Precipitation in Gozo is rarely heavy and does not last days. Consequently, this will not hinder any holiday plans. As the sun will be less intense, it is a great time to enjoy the sun, and sunbathing on deckchairs along the beaches.
Are there any fishing ports in Gozo?
The fishing industry has stepped back in recent decades. In the past many small ports were used by neighbouring villages for fishing. This used to supply food for the residents. The village of Nadur used “Dahlet Qorrot” as a fishing port in the past. Nowadays, you can still find a number of small fishing boats pertaining to local families anchored at sea. On the side of the small port, you can see boathouses which were carved into the bedrock many years ago. These used to ser e as shelter for boats during the severe winter. Fishing tools and baits were also stored there. Nowadays visiting the bay you will encounter people enjoying a swim or BBQ in the evening. The days of the local village fishermen have come to an end.

September activities in Gozo?
The fine warm weather of September leaves plenty of opportunities for activities in Gozo. In the village of Nadur, just 5 minutes away from Il-Barrag Farmhouse B&B, a yearly event takes place. This is the national famous Wine Festival organized by Delicata winemakers. The even takes place across two days where you can taste a selection of different local wines. The even is a must visit to experience the local culture. Embellishing the even, will be stage on which talented local bands perform.
Water events in September?
The month of September welcomes two water events. One is the “Gostra” which takes place in Xlendi Bay, Gozo. This event dates back several centuries. The game is set by erecting a 10-12-meter-long wooden mast over the sea. Three colour flags are attached at the far end. The mast is covered with animal fat, and participants have to run over the slippery wood and get a flag before falling in the sea below. Numerous young adolescents participate in the game while adults prefer to watch. Another famous event is the Regatta which takes place in the Malta’s Gran Harbour. The event is basically boat races. However, this spectacle has also traditional relations with the local. Only specific wooden boats are allowed. This event takes place on the 8th of September, commemorating Victory Day. The latter in Malta and Gozo recalls the end of three historical sieges, mainly the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottoman Empire.
Village feast in Gozo?
The main attraction feast for the month of September is the birth of Virgin Mary, known by the locals as “Il-Bambina” which is also celebrated on the 8th of September. This feast is celebrated in the hilltop village of Xaghra. The village square in front of the main church will be decorated with light and ornament, with local bars offering beverages.
